WOMEN WHO SELL WITH MOURY KHANAM

‘Women Who Sell’ is all about showcasing women who sell, and are thriving and challenging stereotypes. We feature real perspectives of what it’s like, the barriers and the breakthroughs.

Here, Moury Khanam, Channel Account Executive at CyberSmart shares her take.

WHAT IS YOUR JOB TITLE?

Channel Account Executive.

How did you get into sales and what makes it the career of your choice?

I have always been interested in Business/Economics since I was younger and got into a sales role by chance. I always heard you need to be 'tough' to do sales, and it's going to be like Wall Street (it's not!). What I can say is that it's very rewarding if you stick to it. I'm early into this journey but haven't looked back since. The relationship-building/ maintaining aspect is what fuels me. The bond I make with people is really motivating because it shows that people/ organisations trust your point of view.

Are there any barriers you have faced as a woman working in sales, and how have you overcome them?

There have been so many stereotypes that would be thrown at women in sales, and unfortunately, these are 'normalised'. Why?

I have had both ends where they say, "You can make a sale easily, you're a woman" to "You're a woman, good luck networking in a male dominant industry".

In both cases, I wasn't taken seriously & it tied into looks and age. The best way I've learnt to overcome this is to let it become background/silent noise and focus on the successes in front of you.

What do you like the most about being a woman in sales?

Other than the cliche of building relationships with clients, I love the community of women around me!

The support is endless and I love knowing that I'm part of it. I also love the fact there are so many more women in technical roles. I'll always be a cheerleader for pushing women to take the leap into the IT space and to watch them grow.

What advice do you have for a woman wanting to get into sales and those wanting to advance?

If you're wanting to get into sales, don't be put off by stereotypes - prove them wrong! It can be scary to come into a new environment, but be confident and always make sure you enjoy yourself.

To advance, I would say keep learning - finding a mentor or people who have been in your position is a great way to keep levelling up. They were in your shoes once and will be able to guide you. Secondly, don't just give and give. It's easy as a woman to be 'expected to give', especially with external clients because you want to win the deal. But remember they need to give and communicate as much as you and meet the requirements you set out!

Lastly, your voice matters! I have come across a lot of people who have imposter syndrome, just remember you are there for a reason and you deserve it. Don't be afraid to give feedback and ask questions that can be seen as 'taboo' or 'edgy', remember your worth!
